Contraception in Canada:  Where are we now and how can we improve?

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the current landscape of Canadian women’s attitudes, knowledge, and beliefs about contraception.
  • Increase awareness of resources available for patients and health care providers.
  • Highlight social media campaigns designed to increase awareness of contraceptive choices.

 

Presenter's Background

Dr. Black is Full Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Ottawa. She works at The Ottawa Hospital, where she is Medical Director of the Shirley E. Greenberg Women’s Health Centre, and at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. She completed medical training at the University of Western Ontario, University of Ottawa, and Queen’s University and holds a Masters of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University. She is an Associate Scientist at The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute and holds the Dr. Elaine Jolly Chair in Women’s Health Research. 

 

She has assumed many national leadership roles with the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada (SOGC) and is a member of the SOGC Board of Directors. She is Chair of the National Contraception Awareness Program, has authored many national guidelines, and has published in the areas of pediatric gynecology, contraception, and obstetrics. She has been involved the ongoing development of the international award-winning website www.sexandu.ca (www.lesexetmoi.ca) and in a number of educational initiatives in the area of contraception and sexual health, including the development of counselling aids for office practice, the development of contraception modules and workshops for physicians and residents, and the development of on-line learning modules for physicians. She has represented Canada at both the CDC and the WHO in the development of the Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraception. She is Associate Editor of Contraception and Reproductive Medicine.
